Who is A24? The indie studio behind Everything Everywhere All at Once

An A24 production stamp is usually a good sign of indie excellence for any new feature.

And her latest eccentric hit “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is no exception, surpassing $100 million in ticket sales worldwide.

With an impressive roster of cult productions, the company’s exciting reputation extends to the unexpected twists and turns of its crazy, artisanal showlist.

From various acquisitions to risky originals, everything here revolves around A24.

How did A24 come about?

New York City saw the early beginnings of this joint venture, formed in 2013 as a film distribution company.

Daniel Katz, David Fenkel and John Hodges each brought their artistic acumen to this speculative venture.

Her directing – and filming locations – was far removed from the mainstream, with around a quarter of her previous films coming from up-and-coming directors or those returning to A24 for the second time.

Although their first gamble in 2013, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, didn’t necessarily pay off, they hit the jackpot that same year with Spring Breakers.

Budding success was found through jewels found at the Sundance Film Festival.

Following this, her first feature film, Moonlight, won the Best Picture award at the 89th Cannes Film Festivalth Oscars 2017.

Speaking to The Washington Post, director Barry Jenkins said, “The biggest thing that struck me – and why I was so ready to do ‘Moonlight’ – was that I always felt like you could see the filmmakers’ voices in theirs could feel filming.

“That’s why everyone says, ‘I know what A24 film is, but no two A24 films are the same.'”

While the minds behind A24 have remained relatively obscure, what is known is that John Hodges left the core team for Jax Media – producers of Emily in Paris – in 2018.

What are the most successful films from A24?

Lively titles include Great Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017) and Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade (2018) – both receiving 99 percent approval ratings, the highest rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A24 broke its own records in 2022 when Everything Everywhere All at Once overtook Ari Aster’s Hereditary as the world’s highest-grossing film.

The company has also made history with diversity, making space for Asian stories and leads in its films.

Youn Yuh Jung from Minari won Best Supporting Actress in 2021 – becoming the first Korean actress to win an Oscar.

Awkwafina (born Nora Lum) became the first Asian American to achieve a significant milestone, winning Best Actress at the 2020 Golden Globes for A24’s “The Farewell.”

What are A24 vibes?

A24 is a studio, a brand and above all a vibe.

While the phrase has been used colloquially to describe films with strong aesthetics (think fancy aspect ratios and moody color grading), it also describes the confidence of young directors to forge their own path.

The commercialized “vibe” describes unconventional marketing tactics, such as B. their zine and podcast launch, which bypass the usual Hollywood poster approach.

Merchandise is just as creative, with hot dog mitts and an Auditor of the Month trophy candle from Michelle Yeoh’s blockbuster.

With the studio getting the green light for UK shipping, it could bode well for its films and brand to be distributed worldwide, allowing A24 to exist everywhere (all at once).
