About five years ago, a chemical peel was the it treatment to try. Fast forward to 2022 and the skin wellness mantra is more like “be gentle,” meaning the art of facial steaming is back on the menu.

“Deep cleansing is back,” says esthetician and skincare expert Abigail James, who has never let go of this ancient Greek technique. “Steam softens the skin, and while it doesn’t open pores like many believe, it does soften what’s inside your pores, making it an effective step before extraction or simply for a thorough cleansing at the end of the day.” daily.”

Heat from steam is known to increase microcirculation (you’ll know it’s working when your skin turns pink). This allows oxygen and nutrients to be absorbed to the skin’s surface, increasing collagen production. The vapor itself also offers a boost of moisture, which is especially beneficial for those with dry skin types.

Celebrities love this hardworking skincare hack, too. Singer Alicia Keys revealed to British Vogue last month that vaping is her “favorite thing”, saying: “It’s a simple thing that anyone can do”. Victoria Beckham is known for teaching her 30million Instagram followers how “important” a steam session is for a radiant glow, and Jada Pinkett Smith is said to be a fan too.

But you’d be a little naïve to think that Beckham is sitting at home balancing a towel on her head while leaning over a bowl of water. Oh no, the art of vaping has certainly upped their game. There are now several plug-in devices that you can use to measure the intensity and temperature of your vapor. Esthetician Sarah Chapman’s Pro Hydro-Mist Steamer is one of the best on the market (and the device Beckham prefers) as it uses a micro-fine jet of steam to prevent irritation while still delivering the results you expect.

But whether you choose a nifty gadget or stick with what you know, getting started is easy. The key is to steam your face two to three times a week to notice a clearer, rejuvenated complexion.

If you choose the bowl method, experts say a light hair towel is fine along with a large mixing bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of cold water for each cup and a half of boiling you use and always set it on a stable surface to avoid mishaps.

In any case, position your face about 20cm from the steam and make sure the temperature never exceeds 40 degrees – the optimal heat Chapman recommends to relax blemishes. The sessions should not last longer than 10 minutes each, which is the ideal relaxation ritual. Just make sure to cleanse your skin afterwards to rid it of any residue that is left on the skin after the session.

When looking to enhance your at-home experience, adding a few drops of rosewater fills the room with fragrance, and that’s how Keys enjoys hers. Note: Stay away from essential oils as they can irritate and clog the skin. Better yet, applying a plumping serum or mask just before you start vaping can help lock in moisture for lasting hydration. Continue with the rest of your skincare regimen as usual—whether you vape in the morning or at night is up to you.
