Thanks to rare beauty, I’m a blushing person now

I remember the first time a makeup artist put blush on my cheeks; I was seven years old and I was celebrating Shichi Go San, a traditional Japanese rite of passage in which five-year-old boys and three- and seven-year-old girls visit shrines and pray for health and prosperity. In addition to its cultural significance, the holiday is also an important photo opportunity – hence the makeup artist. Looking back at the photos now, I can’t help but laugh at how badly the look just doesn’t work. My lips were painted with crimson polish and my face was stared at with bright pink cheeks that made me look like a Madame Alexander doll. It was enough to completely put me off blushing until my twenties. Even when I picked it up, I gravitated toward blush shades that were as neutral and non-blushing as possible. Until I tried the beloved Soft Pinch Liquid Blush from Rare Beauty.

When Rare Beauty debuted in 2020, its Soft Pinch blush tubes quickly became a hit — so much so that they added new shades last year. With highly pigmented payoff and unique shades, they were catnip for blush lovers — but no surprise. However, I found that they were just as adorable for beginners like me. Since a little goes a long way, you can easily build it up and create your own blush adventure. For this story Selena Gomez Rare Beauty sent me three shades to play with: Joy (a dewy peach), Faith (a matte berry), and Love, a matte terracotta.

Each blush comes in a small tube and can be dabbed onto your cheeks, the back of your hand, or a makeup palette using the oversized doe-foot applicator. You only need a tiny dot to get a natural blush, but you can certainly build up for a more intense shade. The formulation also dries to a long-lasting finish. Joy was perfect for summer and I kept reaching for it outdoors dinner dates and was perfect for the sunburn-but-make-it-blush trend that’s so popular right now. Faith scared me at first, but in the spirit of the purple blush trend, I tapped the smallest amount possible directly onto my cheekbones and blended them out. The result: A fresh out of the cold berry flush that I really loved. My favorite of the bunch was Love, which I paired with Faith in this selfie. (Soft pinch is perfect for blending, as you can see in the Swatch party above.) A co-worker even complimented me on a video call about my rosy cheeks — that’s how good this stuff is.

The best-selling blush has garnered a whopping 698,000 Loves on Sephora, giving it an overwhelmingly positive rating. “[It’s the] The only blush I will use again and again! It blends so well even with my fingers [and] the color goes so well with my skin tone,” enthuses one Sephora customer. At $19 a piece (but TBH, they even look and feel *so* luxurious) they’re on the expensive end of things — but then again, I seriously doubt I’ll ever finish a single one because I only use one point for every cheek. Are you finding the right blush to really make your skin glow from within? now This is Rarely.
