Watch: The team behind it light year Explain the premise of toy story spin off
If you’re confused as to what Pixar’s latest is, just title it light year – streaming now on Disney+ – is actually about it, let me put your mind at ease.
This is how the animation studio’s own creative team likes to present it: in the 1995s toy story, Andy is having a birthday party. And on this birthday he’s receiving a toy based on a character he loves, Buzz Lightyear the Space Ranger.
“I’ve always wondered what movie Buzz was from,” explains director and screenwriter Angus MacLane.

“Why couldn’t we just do this movie? So we did that.” light year is “the movie Andy saw that changed his life…Andy’s.” war of stars.’
Except, that’s not exactly the whole story. Buzz Lightyear, the character, the brave and adventurous space ranger, has appearances outside of the toy story films – namely in the direct-to-video film of 2000 Buzz Lightyear from Star Command: The Adventure Begins and its spin-off TV series Buzz Lightyear from Star Command.
Multiple versions of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin are also available at Disney theme parks. When asked how light year connected to those other irrelevant chapters in Buzz’s story, MacLane told Yahoo, “I always thought that happened after the movie.
“The universal thing is that there is a postlight year Appear. So the design aesthetic is a bit different. Just like Nelvana’s design aesthetic war of stars cartoons, like droids and Ewokswas similar war of starsbut it had a different kind of flavor.”
Fans will then not be able to discover Easter eggs in it light yearalthough MacLane jokes, “I have to say, I made the blasters big enough so that should they want to change the blasters to Astro blasters, they could make them a bit more movie-accurate.”
As a matter of fact, light year won’t be quite the nostalgia-fest many assumed, although we’ve been promised a duel between Buzz and his nemesis Zurg to rival that toy story 2.
The director explains, “We made a list of everything Buzz talks about in the world of Buzz Lightyear toy story. You know, the wings are made of terillium carbon lining, he mentions crystal fusion. So crystal fusion is used in the movie, but it’s not like, ‘remember? It’s crystal fusion like he mentioned toy story!'”
Instead, the film builds a world of its own that MacLane was keen to keep “open”.
He continues: “One of the values of the original war of stars is that it felt like there was a world on all pages of this story.
“And for this film, I really wanted it to be like that – Buzz went to academy, but that’s not the point. He’s a space ranger.
“And that’s the adventure of what’s happening to him right now. But there’s an adventure after or before, and it just leaves the world open and doesn’t close it.”
Could that possibly mean more light year Movies across the board? We have to wait.
